MBBS in Europe for Indian Students: Which Countries Are Realistic?

A European medical degree sounds ideal: strong universities, EU recognition and a high quality of life. For Indian students who want to practise in India, though, Europe comes with three hurdles that brochures rarely mention: higher costs, local languages in clinical training, and an internship rule that many European programs do not fit.

Quick answerEurope is realistic for students with a larger budget or strong academics who are open to building a career in Europe. If your main goal is to practise in India at the lowest cost, check each European program very carefully against NMC’s internship and language rules before applying.

Three issues to understand first

1. The internship rule

India’s FMGL 2021 requires a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, as part of the program, plus at least 54 months of study. Many European medical degrees are six years of integrated study, with practical training built into the final year, and the formal internship or residency happens afterwards under national rules. Whether that final year counts as the required internship depends on the program. Ask the university for a written description of the internship component before you apply. Our guide to FMGL 2021 explains the rule.

2. Language in clinical years

English-taught programs are common in Italy, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria, but patients speak the local language. Universities usually require you to learn it, and clinical work becomes far easier when you do. Germany’s public universities generally teach medicine in German, which means the course does not meet India’s English-medium requirement.

3. Entrance exams and competition

Many European public universities select international students through entrance exams, such as Italy’s admission test for English-taught medicine, or university-specific tests in biology and chemistry. Seats for non-EU students are limited.

Country by country

Country English programs Indicative cost Watch out for
Italy Yes, at several public universities Low tuition at public universities (income-based), moderate living Highly competitive entrance test; Italian for patients
Poland Yes, widely About ₹8-15 lakh per year tuition High fees; Polish for clinical work
Hungary Yes, long tradition High tuition Entrance exams; Hungarian for patients
Czech Republic Yes High tuition Entrance exams; Czech for clinical work
Romania and Bulgaria Yes Moderate tuition by EU standards Local language for patients; check internship structure
Germany Rare for medicine Low or no tuition at public universities German-taught: generally does not meet India’s English rule

Who Europe suits

  • Students with strong academics who can compete in entrance tests.
  • Families with a higher budget, or students who qualify for income-based fees in Italy.
  • Students who are open to practising in Europe and are willing to learn the local language well.

Europe suits less well students whose only goal is to return to India quickly at the lowest cost.

Costs and living

Living costs in European cities are higher than in Central Asia or Russia, and university housing is limited. Platforms such as Amber Student list verified student rooms near many European universities, which helps you avoid rental scams when booking from India.

Start language learning before you leave. Many students take one-to-one lessons with native speakers on italki or Preply, focusing on everyday and medical conversation.

Fees are usually paid in euros. Transparent transfer services such as Wise show their fee and the exchange rate upfront; compare with your bank before each payment.

Frequently asked questions

Is MBBS in Europe valid in India?

Which European country is cheapest for MBBS?

Italy’s public universities have income-based tuition that can be low, but entry is competitive. Romania and Bulgaria are moderate by EU standards. Living costs everywhere in Europe are higher than in Central Asia.
