Central Asia offers some of the lowest total costs for MBBS abroad, short flights from India and large Indian student communities. It also has the widest gap in quality between universities. Choosing well here is less about the country and almost entirely about the specific university.

Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan has several large state medical universities in cities such as Almaty, Astana, Karaganda and Semey, and a few private ones. Facilities at the bigger universities are generally good by regional standards.
What to check: historically, some Kazakh medical programs were five years. Under India’s FMGL 2021 rules the course must be at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship at the same university. Ask for the official study plan for your intake and confirm the internship year and English medium for every year.
Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan, mainly Bishkek and Osh, is popular because of its low total cost and very large Indian student population, with Indian food easy to find. Quality, however, varies enormously: a few universities have their own hospitals and steady licensing exam results, while others offer little patient contact.
Safety note: in May 2024 there was mob violence targeting foreign students in Bishkek, including Indian and Pakistani students. Indian authorities issued advisories at the time. The situation calmed, and many students continued their studies, but families should read the latest Ministry of External Affairs advisories and talk to current students before choosing.
Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan has expanded English-taught medical programs for international students quickly, at state universities in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and other cities, and at newer private and branch campuses. The country has invested in education and infrastructure.
What to check: how long the English program has run, whether it has graduated students yet, which hospitals are used, and whether senior-year teaching is really in English.
NMC advisory (April 2026): on 1 April 2026 the National Medical Commission issued an advisory on Uzbekistan naming Bukhara State Medical Institute, Samarkand State Medical University, Tashkent State Medical University and an offshore campus of TSMU, after the Indian embassy in Tashkent flagged over-admission, weak hands-on training and teaching not in English. Read the latest NMC notices before choosing any Uzbek university.
Checks for any Central Asian university
- Program structure: at least 54 months plus 12 months’ internship, same university, same country. (FMGL 2021 explained)
- English for all years: a written letter from the university, and confirmation from senior students.
- Hospital access: names of hospitals and how many students rotate per group.
- Licensing exam results: FMGE results over several sessions. See how to read pass rates.
- Fees for all six years: in writing, paid directly to the university.
- Class sizes and batch composition: very large all-Indian batches can mean less individual attention and less local language practice.
Our university verification checklist walks through each one.
Living in Central Asia
- Climate: cold winters (especially in Kazakhstan and northern Kyrgyzstan) and hot summers.
- Language: Russian is widely used in cities and hospitals alongside the national language. Learning Russian early pays off in clinical years; one-to-one online tutors on Preply help students practise speaking with patients.
- Flights: short flights from Delhi compared with Europe, though routes change.
- Arrival: an Airalo eSIM gets you online on landing until you buy a local SIM.
- Money: plan how to pay tuition and send living money. Compare student fee transfer and forex card options from BookMyForex with your bank’s rates.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheapest: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan?
Kyrgyzstan generally has the lowest total cost, with indicative full-course tuition of about ₹15-25 lakh. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are typically around ₹18-30 lakh. Living costs are modest in all three.
Is MBBS in Kyrgyzstan safe for Indian students?
Most students study without incident, but there was serious mob violence against foreign students in Bishkek in May 2024. Check current advisories from the Ministry of External Affairs and speak to students at your chosen university.
Is MBBS in Kazakhstan valid in India?
It can be, if the program meets FMGL 2021: at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship at the same university, English throughout, and the right to practise in Kazakhstan. Check the official study plan for your intake.
Do I need Russian in Central Asia?
Teaching should be in English, but patients often speak Russian or the national language. Learning Russian is very useful for clinical years.
