The number on an agent’s brochure is usually first-year tuition. The number your family will actually pay is the total over six years or more, including hostel, food, flights, insurance, visa renewals, books, winter clothes and licensing exam preparation. This page helps you work that number out properly.

The 9 parts of the real cost
- Tuition for every year, including any internship-year fee. Ask for a written schedule for all years.
- Hostel or rent, plus deposits. Hostel fees often rise faster than tuition.
- Food and daily living: mess fees or groceries, local transport, phone, laundry.
- Flights: the first journey plus trips home. Many students fly home once a year.
- Insurance, visa extensions and medical checks, which recur every year in many countries.
- One-time start-up costs: visa, document apostille and translation, medical tests, processing or agent fees, winter clothing.
- Books, instruments and a laptop.
- Money transfer costs: bank margins on exchange rates and fees on every payment.
- Licensing exam preparation and the time after graduation: coaching, exam fees and living costs while preparing and during the internship in India.

A worked example
Suppose a university charges ₹4 lakh tuition and ₹60,000 hostel per year for six years, food and living cost ₹15,000 a month, the student flies home once a year (₹40,000), and yearly insurance and visa costs are ₹20,000. One-time costs are ₹1.5 lakh, and licensing exam preparation ₹60,000. With a 5% yearly increase in fees and living costs, the calculator gives a total of roughly ₹49 lakh, of which tuition is only about 55%. Many families who planned on “₹24 lakh tuition” are surprised by this gap.
How to reduce the total cost
- Compare exchange rates before every payment. Banks often add a margin to the exchange rate. Compare with a student fee transfer service such as BookMyForex or a transparent provider such as Wise, where the destination is supported.
- Use an education loan for remittances where sensible. Education remittances funded by a loan from a specified financial institution do not attract TCS; self-funded remittances above ₹10 lakh a year can. See education loans for MBBS abroad.
- Choose the hostel where it is decent; private rent is usually higher.
- Book flights early for the September intake and holidays.
- Buy winter clothing basics in India where cheaper, and specialist items locally.
- Start licensing exam preparation early, so the student passes sooner. Every extra attempt adds months of cost.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of MBBS abroad for Indian students?
It depends on the country and university. Including living costs, typical totals range from about ₹25-35 lakh in Kyrgyzstan to ₹45-75 lakh in Georgia and more in Nepal or Europe.
What percentage of the cost is tuition?
Often 50-70%. Hostel, food, flights, insurance, visa costs, exam preparation and money transfer costs make up the rest.
Do MBBS fees abroad increase every year?
Many universities revise fees, and exchange rates move. Ask for a written fee schedule and plan for increases.
Is there TCS on MBBS abroad fee payments?
Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, TCS applies to education remittances above ₹10 lakh in a financial year when self-funded. Remittances funded by an education loan from a specified financial institution are exempt. Check the current rate with your bank.
