Eligibility for MBBS abroad has two layers. The first is whether you qualify: NEET, age and Class 12 marks. The second is whether the program qualifies: its length, internship, teaching language and curriculum under India’s rules. Both layers must be right, or the degree may not let you practise in India.
Eligibility at a glance (for Indian students)
| NEET-UG | Must qualify. A NEET result is valid for 3 years for admission abroad. |
|---|---|
| Age | At least 17 years on 31 December of the year of admission. |
| Class 12 subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English. |
| Class 12 marks | Usually at least 50% in PCB together (40% for SC/ST/OBC, 45% for general PwD candidates). |
| Course length | Minimum 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution. |
| Medium | Entire course in English. |
| After returning | Pass FMGE (NExT later) and complete a 12-month supervised internship in India. |

Part 1: Student eligibility
NEET qualification is compulsory
Indian students who want to practise in India after studying medicine abroad must qualify NEET-UG before taking admission. The National Medical Commission (NMC) treats a NEET result as valid for three years from the date the result is declared for the purpose of admission abroad. So a student who qualified in 2024 can still use that result for an intake in 2026, provided admission happens within the three-year window.
Age
You must be at least 17 years old on 31 December of the year you take admission. There is currently no upper age limit for NEET-UG. Individual universities and countries may set their own upper limits for international students, so check the university’s admission rules.
Class 12 subjects and marks
You need to have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English. The commonly applied minimum is 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology for general category students, 40% for SC, ST and OBC students, and 45% for general category students with disabilities. These are the same thresholds used for medical admission in India.
Tip: some foreign universities advertise “no minimum marks”. That does not change India’s rules. If you do not meet the Indian requirement, the degree may not be accepted when you return.
How much NEET score do you need for MBBS abroad?
For Indian eligibility, you need to qualify NEET, that is, score at or above the qualifying percentile for your category in your exam year. There is no separate higher score required by NMC for studying abroad.
However, some universities and countries set their own minimum scores, and a higher score can help with merit-based scholarships or competitive public universities. A good NEET score is also an early sign that you will cope with the licensing exam later. Students with a borderline score should be extra careful to choose a university with strong teaching and clinical exposure.
Part 2: Program eligibility under FMGL 2021
The NMC’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 (FMGL 2021), notified on 18 November 2021, apply to students who joined a foreign medical course after that date. The main conditions are:
- Duration: a course of at least 54 months.
- Internship abroad: at least 12 months of internship in the same foreign institution, as part of the program.
- Medium: the whole course taught in English.
- Curriculum: the subjects and clinical training listed in the regulations, equivalent to the Indian MBBS.
- Same institution and country: no part of the training or internship done in India or in a third country.
- Licence in that country: the graduate must be eligible to register and practise medicine in the country of study, on par with its own citizens.
- Time limit: the course must be completed within 10 years of joining.
Our separate guide, NMC rules for foreign medical graduates in simple language, explains each condition with examples, and how to check if a university is valid for India turns them into a checklist you can use with any university.
What happens after graduation
When you return to India with a degree that meets the conditions above, you must:
- Pass the licensing exam: currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), conducted by NBEMS twice a year. The National Exit Test (NExT) is meant to replace it, but its rollout has been deferred.
- Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India under the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) regulations. See internship in India after a foreign MBBS.
- Apply for registration with the NMC or your state medical council.
Because recent FMGE pass rates have ranged between roughly 13% and 29% per session, licensing exam preparation should start early. A structured program such as the DocTutorials FMGE course can run alongside your university studies.
Common eligibility mistakes families make
- Trusting “NMC approved” claims. NMC does not publish a list of “approved” foreign universities. Eligibility depends on whether your specific program meets the regulations. Ask for documents.
- Ignoring the teaching language of clinical years. Some programs are English-taught in early years but rely on the local language later. FMGL requires English for the whole course.
- Choosing a program that splits training across countries. Twinning programs or schools with clinical rotations in another country can fail the “same institution, same country” condition.
- Shorter programs. Some countries have historically run five-year programs. Check that the course is at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship.
- Missing the NEET validity window. If your NEET result is more than three years old at admission, you will need to qualify again.
First-year medical students also often underestimate how hard anatomy and physiology are. Visual learning tools like Kenhub help many students build a strong base early.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum NEET score for MBBS abroad?
You must qualify NEET-UG, which means scoring at or above the qualifying percentile for your category in your exam year. NMC does not set a separate higher score for studying abroad, but some universities set their own minimums.
How long is a NEET score valid for MBBS abroad?
Three years from the date of declaration of the result, for the purpose of admission to a medical course abroad.
Is there an age limit for MBBS abroad?
You must be at least 17 by 31 December of the admission year. India has no upper age limit for NEET-UG at present, but some universities set their own limits.
Can I study MBBS abroad with 45% in PCB?
For general category students the usual minimum is 50% in PCB. 45% is the threshold for general category students with disabilities, and 40% for SC, ST and OBC students.
Do I need IELTS or TOEFL for MBBS abroad?
Most popular MBBS destinations for Indian students do not require IELTS or TOEFL, because English is part of the Class 12 requirement. Some countries and universities, especially in Europe, may ask for a test or an interview. English must still be a Class 12 subject.
