MBBS in Russia: Quick Guide for Indian Students

Russia has been one of the largest destinations for Indian medical students for decades. Its big state medical universities, long experience with international students and moderate fees make it attractive. But it also brings long winters, a language you must learn for patients, and payment complications since 2022. Here is the full picture.

Russia at a glance

Degree General Medicine (equivalent to MBBS / MD), usually 6 years
Tuition (indicative) About ₹3-6 lakh per year; about ₹18-36 lakh for the full course
Hostel and living Roughly ₹1.5-3 lakh per year, depending on city
Teaching language English-medium tracks at many universities; Russian needed for patients
Climate Cold to very cold winters (often below -10°C)
Intake Mainly September
Key checks English for all 6 years, internship at the same university, payment route

Fee ranges are indicative for 2026 and vary by university and city. Last checked: October 2026.

Why Indian students choose Russia

  • Large state medical universities with their own clinics or long-standing hospital partnerships.
  • Experience with Indian students, including Indian food in many hostels or nearby, and established student communities.
  • Moderate tuition compared with Indian private colleges and with Europe.
  • Six-year programs that are generally structured to include the internship year.

NMC eligibility checks for Russia

Russian programs are not automatically compliant, and the details differ by university. Under FMGL 2021 (explained in NMC rules in simple language) confirm in writing that:

  1. The English-medium track is taught in English for all six years, including clinical subjects and exams. Some universities move to Russian, or mixed teaching, in senior years.
  2. The course is at least 54 months, with a 12-month internship or clinical practice at the same university.
  3. Graduates of the English-medium track can register to practise in Russia (often after an accreditation exam in Russian).
  4. All clinical training happens in Russia, at the university’s hospitals.

Then look up the university on the World Directory of Medical Schools and check recent FMGE results for its graduates. Use our university verification checklist.

How to choose a Russian university

With dozens of universities accepting Indian students, choose using the same criteria for each:

Criterion What good looks like
Teaching language Written confirmation of English for all years
Hospitals Own clinic or large city hospitals with student rotations
Indian students A healthy community, but not so many that classes are crowded or isolated from local students
Licensing exam results Consistent FMGE results over several sessions, with meaningful candidate numbers
City Direct or easy flights, manageable climate, safe hostel area
Fees Published fee schedule for all years, paid directly to the university

Costs and payments

Indicative full-course tuition is about ₹18-36 lakh, with hostel and living adding roughly ₹1.5-3 lakh a year. Larger cities such as Moscow and St Petersburg cost more to live in. Use the total cost calculator with the university’s real figures.

Payments since 2022: international sanctions mean many banks and transfer services no longer send money to Russia, and international cards issued outside Russia generally do not work there. Universities typically name specific banks or routes for fee payment. Before you commit:

  • Ask the university in writing how tuition must be paid from India, and test that your bank can do it.
  • Plan how the student will receive living money (many open a local bank account after arrival).
  • Use authorised dealers in India for foreign exchange. A specialist such as BookMyForex can tell you what is currently possible for Russia; check current options rather than assuming.

Russian language: not optional in practice

Even on an English-medium track, patients speak Russian. Students who reach conversational Russian by the third year get far more hands-on clinical training. Universities teach Russian in the early years, but many students add one-to-one lessons. Online tutors on Preply or italki let you practise medical conversation (history-taking, symptoms, instructions) at a time that fits your timetable. More in do you need the local language?

Life, winter and safety

  • Winter: long, dark and cold in most cities. Good thermal wear and boots matter more than any other purchase. Many students buy basics in India before leaving; compare thermal wear and a heavy winter jacket options, and buy proper snow boots locally.
  • Food: Indian messes and groceries are common near large universities. See food, hostels and safety.
  • Safety: most students report feeling safe in university areas, but follow local advice, avoid isolated areas at night and keep your documents and registration up to date.
  • Travel: connections from Delhi and other Indian cities change over time. Compare flight prices well before the September intake and before holidays.
  • Connectivity: an Airalo eSIM can keep you connected for the first days until you buy a local SIM (check current availability for Russia and that your phone supports eSIM).
