Rankings and brochures rarely tell you what you need to know about a medical university abroad. What matters for an Indian student is whether the degree will be accepted, whether you will see enough patients, and whether graduates go on to pass the licensing exam. These 12 criteria, scored the same way for every university, make the comparison fair.
Step 1: pass or fail checks
A university that fails any of these is out, whatever its fees:
- Course length: at least 54 months of study.
- Internship: 12 months at the same university, in that country.
- English medium for all years.
- Licence to practise in that country for graduates.

Step 2: score the remaining universities (0-5 each)
| # | Criterion | What a 5 looks like | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Hospital access | Own large hospital or formal rotations in major city hospitals, small groups | x3 |
| 6 | Licensing exam results | Consistent FMGE results above the national average over several sessions, with meaningful numbers | x3 |
| 7 | Teaching quality | Experienced faculty, fluent English teaching confirmed by senior students | x2 |
| 8 | Total cost | Clear fee schedule for all years within your budget | x2 |
| 9 | Local language support | Structured language classes; students conversational by year 3 | x1 |
| 10 | Safety and city | Safe area, reliable transport, manageable climate, good flight links | x1 |
| 11 | Student support | International office that responds, Indian food options, health care access | x1 |
| 12 | Batch mix and size | Moderate class sizes, a mix of nationalities | x1 |
Multiply each score by its weight and add them up (maximum 70). Compare totals, but also look at any criterion scoring 0-1: a very weak score on hospitals or licensing results should worry you even if the total is good.
How to find the information
- Hospitals: ask the university for hospital names and group sizes, then look them up.
- Licensing results: see how to read FMGE pass rates.
- Teaching quality and language: talk to two or three Indian students in their fourth or fifth year, not first-years.
- Cost: official fee schedule for all years; plug into the total cost calculator.
- Safety: Ministry of External Affairs advisories and current students.
Questions to ask senior students
- How many patients did you examine yourself last semester?
- Is teaching in your year fully in English? Are exams in English?
- How good is your local language now, and did the university help?
- What surprised you about costs?
- Are graduates from your university passing the FMGE?
- Would you choose this university again?
Students who are serious about clinical years usually start the local language early. Short one-to-one sessions with a tutor on Preply are an easy way to practise the patient conversations you will need. A strong base in anatomy from the first semester also helps, and tools like Kenhub make it easier.
Frequently asked questions
Are world rankings useful for choosing a medical university abroad?
Only a little. Rankings mostly reflect research. For an Indian student, NMC eligibility, hospital access and licensing exam results matter far more.
Is a university with many Indian students better?
A community helps with food and support, but very large all-Indian batches can mean bigger classes and less local language practice. A healthy mix is ideal.
What is the single most important criterion?
After passing the NMC eligibility checks, hands-on hospital access. It drives both clinical skill and licensing exam performance.
