Georgia has become a favourite for Indian families who want a European-style city life, a milder climate than Russia and English-taught medicine. It is also more expensive than Central Asia, and with many private universities competing for students, quality checks matter.

Why students choose Georgia
- English-taught MD programs at public and private universities.
- Livable cities with a European feel, good safety reputation and easy travel within the country.
- Milder climate than Russia or Kazakhstan, especially in Batumi.
- Straightforward admission for most universities, with a document check and sometimes an interview or English test.
Eligibility checks for Georgian programs
Georgian MD programs are commonly six years. To meet India’s FMGL 2021 rules, confirm in writing that:
- the program is at least 54 months, with a 12-month internship or clinical rotation at the same university in Georgia;
- it is taught in English throughout, including clinical years;
- graduates can register as doctors in Georgia (Georgia requires further steps, such as a state certification exam and residency, for local practice; ask how the program fits these);
- the university is authorised and the program accredited by Georgia’s National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement (NCEQE).
See FMGL 2021 in simple language and the verification checklist.
Choosing a university in Georgia
Georgia has a handful of long-established state universities and a large number of private universities, some very new. Compare them on:
- Hospital access: does the university own or formally partner with major hospitals, and how many students rotate per group?
- Track record: how many graduates, and how have they done in the FMGE and other licensing exams? (How to read pass rates)
- Accreditation status: current, for the specific MD program.
- Class composition: a mix of international students is usually healthier than an all-Indian batch.
Costs and accommodation
Indicative tuition is about ₹5-9 lakh a year (often quoted in US dollars), so roughly ₹30-55 lakh over the full course, before living costs. Rent in Tbilisi and Batumi has risen in recent years. Many universities have limited hostel places, so students often share private flats.
If the university cannot offer a hostel, a platform like Amber Student lists verified student rooms and flats, which is safer than booking blind through social media. Always visit or video-call before paying a deposit, and get a written rental agreement.
Tuition is usually paid in USD or GEL. Compare the total cost of each transfer: Wise shows its fee and exchange rate upfront, and your bank or an authorised dealer may offer student rates. Check which option supports education payments from India to Georgia.

Georgian language for clinical years
Georgian has its own alphabet and is not related to Russian or English. Universities teach it in the early years, but patient conversations in clinical years go much better with extra practice. Online tutors on Preply can focus on medical phrases such as history-taking and explaining procedures. More in do you need the local language?
On arrival, an Airalo eSIM keeps you connected until you buy a local SIM.
