MBBS in Nepal and Bangladesh: Closer to Home

For many Indian parents, Nepal and Bangladesh feel like the “safest” foreign options: close to home, familiar food and culture, and a curriculum modelled on the Indian MBBS. Those advantages are real. The trade-offs are higher fees, limited seats for foreign students and, in Bangladesh’s case, recent political disruption.

Why families choose Nepal and Bangladesh

  • Similar curriculum and textbooks to India, which helps with Indian licensing exam preparation.
  • Similar disease patterns, so clinical experience transfers well to Indian practice.
  • Familiar food, culture and climate.
  • Short travel, by road to Nepal and short flights to Dhaka.

MBBS in Nepal

Nepal’s medical colleges are affiliated to universities such as Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University, among others. Admission for all students is regulated by Nepal’s Medical Education Commission, which sets entrance and seat rules for foreign students. Rules have been revised in recent years, so check the commission’s current notices for foreign candidates before applying.

Cost: Nepal is one of the more expensive options in the region, with indicative full-course tuition of about ₹45-70 lakh. Living costs are modest.

Indian students: Hindi is widely understood, which makes daily life easier, and the Indian rupee is accepted in many places near the border, but tuition must be paid through proper banking channels.

MBBS in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has government and private medical colleges affiliated to public universities, following a five-year MBBS plus a one-year internship. Foreign students usually join private colleges through the government’s foreign student application process. Bengali is the patient language; students from West Bengal, Tripura and Assam often adapt very quickly.

2024 disruption: during the unrest in July and August 2024, many Indian students returned home, and classes were disrupted for weeks. Families considering Bangladesh should read the latest Ministry of External Affairs and High Commission advisories and speak to current students.

NMC eligibility for Nepal and Bangladesh

Both countries’ standard MBBS structures are designed around a 12-month internship after the academic course. Under FMGL 2021 confirm for your specific college that:

  • the academic course is at least 54 months;
  • the 12-month internship is done at the same institution, in that country;
  • teaching is in English;
  • foreign graduates can register with the country’s medical council (Nepal Medical Council or the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council).

Use the verification checklist and FMGE results for each college.

Which suits whom?

  • Nepal suits families who value proximity and can afford higher fees, and students comfortable with an Indian-style system.
  • Bangladesh suits families wanting an Indian-style curriculum at a lower cost than Nepal, particularly Bengali-speaking students, provided they are comfortable with the current situation.
  • Students on a tighter budget usually compare these with Russia or Central Asia. See best countries by budget.

The curriculum similarity is a real advantage for the Indian licensing exam, but it is not a guarantee. Students still need steady preparation from year one, for example with the DocTutorials FMGE course.

For fee payments, compare your bank’s rate with a student remittance service such as BookMyForex, and keep every receipt for loan and tax records. For trips home or to Dhaka, an Airalo eSIM avoids expensive roaming.
