Scholarships for MBBS Abroad: What Is Real and Where Indian Students Can Look

An honest guide to scholarships for MBBS abroad: genuine government and university options, "agent scholarships" that are really discounts, and how to apply.

Scholarships for MBBS Abroad: Where to Look

Full scholarships for an undergraduate medical degree abroad are rare, and many “scholarships” advertised to Indian families are really fee discounts built into the price. That said, some genuine options exist. This guide separates the two.

Quick answerGenuine options include government quota scholarships offered by some countries (for example Russia’s state quota), income-based support at Italian public universities, and merit fee waivers at some universities. Treat any “scholarship” that requires paying an agent first with suspicion.

Types of funding you may come across

Type How it works How common for MBBS
Foreign government quota or scholarship Tuition waived (sometimes with a small stipend) for a limited number of foreign students Limited, competitive
Regional or income-based support Fee reduction or grant based on family income, mainly in some EU countries Available in places such as Italy, competitive
University merit waivers Partial tuition reduction for high marks or NEET score, sometimes renewed on performance Fairly common, usually partial
Indian state or community schemes Support from some state governments, trusts or community organisations Varies; check your state and community
“Agent scholarships” A reduced fee advertised as a scholarship Very common; often marketing

Where to look

Russia: government quota

Russia offers a quota of state-funded places for foreign students each year, applied for through the official “Education in Russia” portal and Russian cultural centres. Places are limited and competitive, and students still pay living costs. Check the current year’s rules and deadlines on the official portal.

Italy: income-based regional support

Italian public universities charge fees linked to family income, and regional education agencies offer scholarships and housing support based on income and merit. Students must first win a seat through the competitive admission test for English-taught medicine. See MBBS in Europe.

University merit waivers

Many universities in Central Asia, Georgia and elsewhere offer partial waivers for strong Class 12 marks or NEET scores, or for top performance in university exams. Ask the university’s international office directly and get the terms in writing: what percentage, for how long, and what you must maintain.

Indian state, community and trust schemes

Some state governments, community organisations and charitable trusts support students in professional courses. Most national overseas scholarships in India are for postgraduate study, so check the eligibility of any scheme for undergraduate medicine abroad. The National Scholarship Portal and your state’s scholarship portal are good starting points.

Discounts dressed up as scholarships

Be careful when:

  • the “scholarship” is guaranteed to everyone who books through a particular agent;
  • you must pay a “scholarship registration” or “processing” fee;
  • the discounted fee is shown only for the first year;
  • there is nothing in writing from the university itself.

A genuine scholarship or waiver is confirmed by the university or the awarding government body, in writing, with clear conditions. Our agent red flags guide covers other warning signs.

How to apply well

  1. Start early: government quotas and Italian admissions have deadlines months before the intake.
  2. Prepare strong documents: mark sheets, NEET scorecard, a clear statement of purpose and recommendation letters.
  3. Apply to several options, not just one.
  4. Get every offer in writing, including renewal conditions.
  5. Combine sensibly: a partial waiver plus an education loan and careful money transfers can make a big difference over six years. Comparing exchange rates with a student service such as BookMyForex on every payment also adds up.

Frequently asked questions

Are there full scholarships for MBBS abroad for Indian students?

Full scholarships are rare. Some government quota places (such as Russia’s) waive tuition, but they are limited and competitive, and living costs remain.

Can I get a scholarship based on my NEET score?

Some universities offer partial fee waivers for strong NEET scores or Class 12 marks. Ask the university directly and get the terms in writing.

Is the scholarship offered by my agent genuine?

Ask for written confirmation from the university. If it requires a fee to an agent, applies only to the first year, or is offered to everyone, it is probably a discount, not a scholarship.
